• Some Orchard-y Goodness

Barnards Orchards is a fourth generation business in Kennett Square, Chester County, I was able to visit shortly after Christmas and found some great produce and treats to take home.

  • Lancaster County Spring

Before we head to western Pennsylvania, let’s take a look at some shots from a nice Spring day in Lancaster County. It was a good day for photography, the sun was shining and the cows seemed happy.

This shot and following one are the same farm.
  • Lititz and Ephrata Countryside Drive

A recent drive to visit some covered bridges in the Lititz and Ephrata area led me through some lovely countryside in northern Lancaster County. Here is a look a look at some of the farms that I saw and other views.

  • Pennsylvania’s Fruit Basket

Western Adams County, along the slopes of South Mountain, hosts a large number of orchards. I was on my way to Gettysburg from Pine Grove Furnace and happened on this area by chance. It was a nice surprise.

A look down a row of new trees.
    A mature orchard,
I loved this farm peeking out from behind the pond.

I had to visit the Historic Round Barn and Farm Market in Biglerville, PA. The family-owned market has fresh fruits and vegetables, jams, jellies, honey, canned fruits and vegetables, snacks, candy, and gift items. It is well worth a visit if you are near Gettysburg.

A very interesting building and well-maintained.

    Some adorable residents.
  • Back to Linvilla Orchards

Fall is one of the most popular times of year at Linvilla Orchards in Delaware County. The charming Halloween and fall decor, hay rides, food and activities are fun for the whole family (and school groups). The fresh produce, pies and apple cider donuts are particularly recommended.

Fantastic pumpkin carving is on display.

The decorative displays have a story book theme.

The colorful displays of pumpkins and gourds are very tempting.

  • Around Delaware County – Farms Behind Fences

As the county with the lowest percentage of open space in southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware County is not someplace you might expect to find agricultural activity, but there is more than you think.

Linvilla Orchards is probably the best know agricultural operation. Not only do they grow fruit here, but it has been a beloved local attraction for decades, featuring hay rides, pick your own produce, playgrounds, visits with animals, and a wonderful market.

    Pick your own.

Out the back to some cornfields.

A visit with Mr. Billy Goat.

    A pony ride to remember.

Indian Orchards Farms is near Linvilla and sells locally grown and organic produce. It has some pick your own options as well.

    Pick your own blueberries.

Finally, Hidden Valley Horse Farm is located within Ridley Creek State Park and offers boarding, riding, and instruction. It was hard to get close enough to photograph anything, and the horses all had their butts to me.
